The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of the first volume in Sassoon’s semi-autobiographical Sherston trilogy. Octavo, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles to the spine, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, title page vignette, illustrated with color lithographs. Boldly signed by illustrator Paul Hogarth on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1,600 numbered copies, this is number 28. In fine condition. Illustrated by Paul Hogarth. Paul Hogarth was a British illustrator and reportage artist known for his expressive, documentary-style drawings that brought a dynamic visual realism to literary works by authors such as Graham Greene, George Orwell, and Brendan Behan.
Sassoon's "lightly fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, in which he figures as the narrator George Sherston, was an immediate success, was awarded the Hawthornden and James Tait Black memorial prizes, and was quickly accepted as a classic of its kind an elegy for a way of life which had gone for ever. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1937)" (ODNB).
