Rare signatures of National Women’s Hall of Fame inductee Julia Ward Howe. Two signatures. The first, with holograph date on a small card, "Julia Ward Howe. April. 1905." The second, clipped from a letter including typed closing, "Yours respectfully" with her bust portrait also clipped from a newspaper and mounted to a larger paper sheet, accompanied with a clipped bust portrait and signature of Ralph S. Bauer on verso. In very good condition with toning and irregularly trimmed edges.
Julia Ward Howe (1819–1910) was a prominent American writer, social reformer, and advocate for abolition and women’s rights. She is best known as the author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic (1862), a patriotic anthem that became closely associated with the Union cause during the Civil War. Beyond her literary achievements, Howe played a significant role in the women’s suffrage movement, co-founding the New England Woman Suffrage Association and participating in national campaigns for gender equality. She also promoted pacifism and social reform through initiatives such as the establishment of Mother's Day for Peace, an early version of what would become the modern Mother’s Day, envisioned as a call to disarmament and unity among women.
