Arthur Fiedler, long-time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between classical music and popular culture in 20th-century America. Through innovative programming that incorporated popular tunes, show tunes, and light classical pieces, Fiedler broadened the appeal of orchestral music and cultivated a mass audience. His tenure from 1930 to 1979 transformed the Boston Pops into a national institution, aided by radio broadcasts, recordings, and televised performances, all of which positioned Fiedler as a central figure in the popularization of classical music in the United States.
