Dale Murphy (born 1956) was a cornerstone of the Atlanta Braves during the 1980s and one of the era’s premier all-around players, renowned for his power, defense, and durability. A two-time National League Most Valuable Player (1982, 1983), Murphy was a seven-time All-Star and a multiple Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner, excelling as a center fielder while anchoring the Braves’ offense during a period of renewed competitiveness. He twice led the National League in home runs and was widely admired for combining elite performance with consistency, famously playing 740 consecutive games at one point. Although he did not win a World Series championship with Atlanta, Murphy’s statistical production, leadership, and sportsmanship established him as one of the franchise’s defining figures and a lasting symbol of Braves baseball in the pre-1990s era.
