Rare vintage matte-finish portrait photograph of Orville Wright. Inscribed by Wright at the lower left corner in fountain pen, "To Wm. P. MacCracken from his friend Orville Wright." The recipient, William P. MacCracken Jr. (1888–1969), was an American lawyer, aviator, and public official who played a pivotal role in shaping early U.S. aviation policy. As the first Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics (1926–1929), he helped implement the Air Commerce Act of 1926, establishing federal standards for pilot licensing, air traffic regulation, and aviation safety. In near fine condition with fading to the inscription. Portrait by Underwood & Underwood of Washington. The piece measures 8 inches by 10 inches.
The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful airplane. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1904-1905 the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft.
