First edition of the autobiography of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, focusing mainly on his military career during the Mexican War and the Civil War. Octavo, 2 volumes with volume one a later printing and volume two a first printing, original green cloth with title and front panel in gilt, illustrated with numerous steel engravings, facsimiles, and 43 maps. In near fine condition. Accompanied by a four page pamphlet titled "Description of the Grant Cottage" and presented by The Custodian laid in.
