Rare original carte de visite portraits of Civil War generals Ulysses S. Grant, Henry Halleck, William T. Sherman, George McClellan, and George Meade. Five albumen photographs in an Optium Museum Acrylic glass frame, with the rear panel also in acrylic glass to expose photographic stamps to the versos. The Sherman and McClellan carte de visites bear a stamp from Philadelphia Photographic Co. with Meade's carte de visite bearing a statement to the public from Henszey & Co., also of Philadelphia. Framed. In near fine condition.
The carte de visite photograph proved to be a very popular item during the American Civil War. Soldiers, friends and family members would have a means of inexpensively obtaining photographs and sending them to loved ones in small envelopes. Photos of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and other celebrities of the era became instant hits in the North. People were not only buying photographs of themselves, but also collecting photographs of celebrities.
