Rare B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay model on stand. Hand painted 1/72 scale model of the Enola Gay with a 23.5 inch wingspan and accompanied by four attachable propellors, each measuring approximately 2.5 inches in length. Boldly signed by Paul Tibbets on the right wing in black felt tip. In fine condition. The plane measures 16 inches in length from end to end, while the stand measures 9.5 inches by 4.75 inches by 8 inches. Housed in the original box.
Named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of pilot and aircraft commander Colonel Paul Tibbets, the Enola Gay became the first aircraft to drop an atomic weapon with the release of "Little Boy" on the city of Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945. The bomb resulted in the near complete destruction of the city, causing an estimated 160,000 immediate civilian casualties and thousands of subsequent deaths associated with radiation, starvation, and dehydration.
