Rare pairing of letters signed by American presidents James A. Garfield and William McKinley. The President Garfield letter is one page, hand-written, dated August 22, 1878, and addressed to De Kay. Boldly signed "J. A. Garfield," the letter reads in part, "My illness at Atlantic City was only temporary & I shall soon be in the political campaign. With kind regards. Yours very truly." The piece measures 4.75 inches by 7.5 inches. The President McKinley letter is one page, typed, dated March 27, 1896, on a personal William McKinley letterhead, and addressed to Eugene Seeger, Esqr. Boldly signed "W. McKinley," the letter reads in full, "My Dear Sir:- I have your favor of the 24th inst. informing me as to the action of the Illinois Lithuanian Republican Alliance; and I beg that you convey to the members of that organization my warmest thanks for their flattering expression of partiality and confidence. Yours very truly." The piece measures 5.25 inches by 7.5 inches. Accompanied with First Day Covers of each president. Matted and framed. In near fine condition. The entire piece measures 24 inches by 13 inches.

James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington D.C. by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed and delusional office seeker. William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term. McKinley led the United States in the Spanish–American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals.
