Hand-Colored engraved botanical plate from Johann Christoph Volkamer's 'Nürnbergische Hesperides.' Hand-colored engraved botanical plate of Phaseolus Indic Cochleatus, or the Runner Bean plant. In fine condition. Double matted with a gilt ornamental border and framed. This piece measures 21.5 inches by 16.75 inches.
Johann Christoph Volkamer was a German botanist, merchant, and avid collector known for his significant contributions to the study and depiction of citrus fruits and other exotic plants. Volkamer's most notable work, the 'Nürnbergische Hesperides,' was a first published in 1708 and featured detailed illustrations and descriptions of citrus fruits, along with their trees and flowers. This book included 256 copperplate engravings, many of which were based on Volkamer's own drawings and observations.
