First edition of this collection of speeches by the United State's 25th president. Octavo, original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel, pale yellow endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of McKinley, illustrated with four additional tissue-guarded plates. Association copy, inscribed on the front flyleaf by William McKinley as Governor of Ohio, “For Hon. WRDay, with the sincere regard of his friend WMcKinley Columbus Ohio Dec 18/95." The recipient, William Rufus Day served as Secretary of State under McKinley and later Supreme Court Justice under Theodore Roosevelt. Although he assumed the position of Secretary of State just a few days after the start of the Spanish-American war, Day worked tirelessly to secure the neutrality of Europe until the very end. During his tenure on the court, Day wrote 439 opinions, maintaining a staunchly antitrust perspective and delivering the Court's important opinion in Weeks v. United States, which ruled that warrantless seizure of documents from a private home violates Fourth Amendment search and seizure requirements. In very good condition with rubbing to the extremities and ownership signatures to the front free endpaper, rebacked. Books signed by McKinley prior to his presidency are rare.
William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term. McKinley led the United States in the Spanish–American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals.
