An oil on canvas of the founder of the Methodist movement John Wesley. In this half-length view, Wesley is depicted in profile wearing a black cassock and Geneva bands preaching at a pulpit, his right hand gesticulating and his left hand holding an open book. From circa 1820s. Housed in a mahogany and gilt filet frame. The entire piece measures 28 inches by 24 inches.
John Wesley was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day.
