Rare typed transcription of the tribute delivered by Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's grave on Memorial Day, 1956 before the Roosevelt Home Club. Five pages, typescript. Presentation copy, inscribed in the upper right corner of the first page, "For Dorothy & Tom McAllister with the cordial greetings of F.F." The recipient, Thomas McAllister served as a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth circuit between 1941 and 1976. His wife, Dorothy McAllister served as the director of the Democratic National Committee. In near fine condition.
Following the death of Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo in July 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt nominated close friend and loyal adviser Felix Frankfurter. The nomination was met with opposition due to Frankfurter's close relationship with the President and affiliation with special interest groups. The controversy permanently changed the process which had been followed for 150 years, being the first time that a nominee for the Supreme Court appeared in person before the Judiciary Committee. In his eulogy, presented before the Roosevelt Home Club on Memorial Day, 1956 at Roosevelt's grave in Hyde Park, Frankfurter states: "What is said of Benjamin Franklin may be said of Franklin Roosevelt, that he was a 'harmonious human multitude.' There were fused in him the qualities necessary for leading our people out of a period of deepening economic and moral deterioration by invigorating, through precept and example, the forces of democracy."
