Sculptural bust of influential Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. Faux antique bronze, mounted on a walnut base. Signed by the artist, “T. Holland” on the rear of the bust. Best remembered as a sculptor and avid polo player, California native Thomas Holland created a variety of bronze pieces primarily depicting equestrian themes and major literary figures. The entire piece measures 15 inches tall. In near fine condition. A unique piece.
The leading playwright of his generation, Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw wrote more than sixty plays throughout his lifetime including Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). His works incorporated contemporary satire and historical allegory and he has regularly been rated as second only to Shakespeare among British dramatists.
