Printer to the University of Cambridge, Joseph Bentham's tenure from 1731 to 1766 marked one of the most accomplished periods in the university’s printing history. Bentham was renowned for his precision, typographical elegance, and the high quality of his ecclesiastical and academic publications. As official printer, he produced numerous editions of the Book of Common Prayer, Bibles, and classical works, many of which were commissioned for royal and clerical use. His 1740s folios, including this Book of Common Prayer, are distinguished by their clarity of type, balanced layout, and fine presswork that reflected the refinement of mid-eighteenth-century Cambridge printing. Bentham’s craftsmanship helped establish the University Press as one of the foremost centers of learned printing in Britain, rivaling Oxford and the King’s Printer in London.
