First edition, first printing of this "well-constructed and comprehensive overview of visual neuroscience" (The Washington Post). Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by Francis Crick in the year of publication to his personal assistant on the front free endpaper, "For Maria with many thanks for all the hard, tedious work you did on it. Love, Francis." The recipient, Betty “Maria” Lang was employed at the Salk Institute from 1977 to her retirement in 1994, where her organizational skills and dedication facilitated Crick’s research activities. Crick, an advocate of open marriage, enjoyed with Lang a sexual relationship between 1981 and 1992. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by One Plus One Studio. Jacket photograph by Michel Tcherevkoff/Image Bank. An exceptional association.
Traditionally, the human soul is regarded as a nonphysical concept that can only be examined by psychiatrists and theologists. The Astonishing Hypothesis, Nobel Laureate Francis Crick boldly straddles the line between science and spirituality by examining the soul from the standpoint of a modern scientist, basing the soul's existence and function on an in-depth examination of how the human brain "sees."
