Volume V is inscribed by Martin Gilbert on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. Ward - with warmest regards and all good wishes from Martin Gilbert 11th January 1978." Vols. III, IV, VI, VII & VII are each signed by Martin Gilbert on the title page. Volumes I, II, IV, V, VII, VIII are first editions, volumes III & VI are later printings.
