John Calvin, a leading figure of the Protestant Reformation, preached regularly in Geneva, where he had established a Reformed community after fleeing religious persecution in France. It was in this context that he delivered a series of sermons on Psalm 119, one of the longest and most theologically dense psalms in the biblical canon. In these sermons, Calvin engaged the text eight verses at a time, following the structure of the Hebrew alphabet, and offering sustained exegetical and doctrinal reflections on divine law, faith, obedience, and the believer’s relationship to Scripture. These sermons were subsequently translated from the French by Thomas Stocker and published in English in the late sixteenth century. The present volume constitutes the first edition of that English translation—a rare printing that holds particular importance for the study of Calvin’s reception in the English-speaking Reformed tradition and for the transmission of Continental Reformed theology into the English vernacular.
