First edition of Thornton's satirical reinterpretation of the famous libertine legend. Octavo, two volumes bound in full crushed levant morocco by Lloyd with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt scrolling and cornerpieces to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles stamp-signed by Lloyd, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, illustrated with  thirty-one hand-colored aquatint plates by Atkinson including frontispieces. "The first volume is a parody of Mozart's and Byron's "Don Juan", the second an imitation of Egan's "Life in London." In near fine condition, bookplate. A rare work in an exquisite binding.
A satirical reinterpretation of the famous libertine legend, Alfred Thornton’s Don Juan presents the widely referenced character in a humorous and irreverent light. Unlike the more serious and philosophical portrayal found in Byron’s version, Thornton’s Don Juan is a playful figure used to mock the social and political conventions of early 19th-century Britain.
