According to Alfred Nobel's will, the Nobel Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Both His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop of Cape Town Desmond Tutu have been awarded the Prize for their roles in opposition to the Chinese occupation of Tibet and South African apartheid respectively.
