Henry Graham Greene was an English writer and journalist regarded by many as one of the leading novelists of the 20th century. Combining literary acclaim with widespread popularity, Greene acquired a reputation early in his lifetime as a major writer, both of serious Catholic novels and of thrillers. In 1940, he published 'The Labyrinthine Ways,' also known as 'The Power and the Glory' about a renegade Catholic 'whisky priest' [a term coined by Greene] living in the Mexican state of Tabasco in the 1930s. The novel received the Hawthornden Prize British literary award a year later, and was chosen by TIME magazine in 2005 as one of the hundred best English-language novels since 1923.
