Octavo, original tan cloth, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece portrait of Tecumseh. P.T. Sherman’s bookplate to the half title page. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In very good condition.
Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief and warrior who promoted resistance to United States Westward expansion onto Native American lands. A persuasive orator, Tecumseh traveled widely, forming a Native American confederacy and promoting intertribal unity. Even though his efforts to unite Native Americans ended with his death in the War of 1812, he became an iconic folk hero in American, Indigenous, and Canadian popular history. According to General William Tecumseh Sherman's Memoirs, General Sherman was named "William Tecumseh", his father having "caught a fancy for the great chief of the Shawnees, 'Tecumseh.'" However, Lloyd Lewis's 1932 biography claimed that Sherman was originally named only "Tecumseh" and that he acquired the name "William" at the age of nine or ten, when he was baptized as a Catholic at the behest of his foster family.
