Early edition of this collection of facts and stories about cats, compiled by Sarah J. Eddy; from the library of writer and social reformer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Octavo, original light green cloth, illustrated with numerous plates of cat photographs and an additional pamphlet of photos laid in. Inscribed in ink by Gilman on the front free endpaper with her Norwich, Connecticut address. Gilman was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate, and eugenicist who served as a role model for future generations of utopian feminists. Best known for her semi-autobiographical short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper,' which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis, Gilman has written works on gender and male domination that continue to maintain their relevance in today's society. In very good condition.
Sarah James Eddy was an American artist and photographer who specialized in the platinotype process. She was active in abolition, reform, and suffragist movements, and was a philanthropist instrumental in the founding of the Rhode Island Humane Society. An animal welfare activist and vegetarian, Eddy founded the Rhode Island Humane Education Association. Between 1899 and 1938, she wrote or compiled five children's books on animals and their care, which featured photographs of her own felines. At her death, she was the director of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
