First edition of the fifth book in the 'Tarzan' series. Octavo, original navy blue cloth, frontispiece and seven illustrations by J. Allen St. John. In very good condition. Slight toning to the front free endpaper. Small closed tears to the fore edge of three pages.
The noble savage Tarzan first appeared in Burroughs' 1912 story Tarzan of the Apes, published in the pulp magazine The All-Story and in book form two years later. An archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by Mangani great apes, Tarzan spawned innumerable works in literature and film, including 25 sequels and the popular Tarzan movie franchise which lasted from the 1930s to the 1960s. In 'Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar,' Tarzan travels to Opar, the forgotten outpost of Atlantis, to retrieve valuable treasures for himself and Jane, where he is bombarded by Opar's high priestess and loses his memories.
