The first of Burroughs' realistic historical novels about life and death on an Apache reservation during the final years of the Apache wars. 'The War Chief' follows Shoz-Dijiji, or Black Bear, kidnapped from his white pioneer family and raised by the Apache. This novel is the manifestation of Burroughs' respect for Native American life and sympathy for their history of exploitation.
