First edition, early printing of the seventeenth book in Burroughs' popular Tarzan series. Octavo, original gray cloth with blue top stain. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Publisher's notice to the front free endpaper, dictating the book's status as one of the few survivors of a 1958 store-room fire. Frontispiece by J. Allen St. John.
In this, the seventeenth book in the series, the 'Man of the Apes' becomes involved with a Hollywood motion picture company that has come to shoot a film in Africa with a cowardly Tarzan look-alike. The noble savage Tarzan first appeared in Burroughs' 1912 story Tarzan of the Apes, published in pulp magazine The All-Story and in book form two years later. An archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by Mangani great apes, Tarzan spawned innumerable works in literature and film, including 25 sequels and the popular Tarzan movie franchise which lasted from the 1930s to the 1990s with the release of Disney's animated film, Tarzan, released in 1999.
