Large format satin-finish color photograph of the iconic 'Earthrise' image taken by Bill Anders during the Apollo 8 mission, signed by mission commander Frank Borman, "Frank Borman, Apollo 8 CDR." With fellow Apollo 8 astronauts James Lovell and William Anders, Frank Borman was one of the first humans to witness an Earthrise. Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968, and was the second crewed spaceflight mission flown in the United States Apollo space program after Apollo 7, which stayed in Earth orbit. Apollo 8 was the third flight and the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket, and was the first human spaceflight from the Kennedy Space Center, located adjacent to Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida. Borman served as Commander of Apollo 8 and was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor following the mission. In fine condition. The photograph measures 20 inches by 16 inches.
Taken by American astronaut William Anders from lunar orbit on December 24th 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission, 'Earthrise' has become synonymous with the American space program and essentially marked the beginning of the environmental program. In Life's 100 Photographs that Changed the World, wilderness photographer Galen Rowell called Earthrise "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken". Fifty years to the day after taking the photo, William Anders observed, "We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth."
