Signed limited edition of this work by Edith Wharton, one of only 130 copies signed by Wharton. Quarto, original cloth, printed on handmade paper. Near fine with light offsetting to the endpapers in the rare original dust jacket, which is in very good condition with some of the spine lacking. One of Wharton's scarcest titles and the only to be issued in a signed limited edition. Housed in a custom half morocco chemise and clamshell box. An exceptional example.
Only 130 copies of these 12 poems were published. Several of the poems, such as “The Tryst,” address the death and destruction wrought by World War I. It also contains possibly her most famous poem: “With the Tide.” An elegy for her friend Theodore Roosevelt, “With the Tide” was first published in the Saturday Evening Post shortly after his death in 1919. As she told Roosevelt’s sister, “My lines on your brother were written in a rush, out of a heart wrung with sorrow, sorrow for the lost friend & for the great leader gone when he was most needed…When I write of your brother my heart chokes in my throat & I can’t go on. No one will ever know what his example & his influence were to me.”
