Anderson's 18th century American engraved map of Jerusalem, produced by him for the first American edition of George Maynard's Whole Genuine and Complete Works of Flavius Josephus. One page, the engraved map includes the major landmarks of Jerusalem including Solomon's Temple, David's Palace, and The Hippodrome, and Isaiah's Sepulcher, and Agrippa's Palace. One of the earliest American wood-engravers, Alexander Anderson was commonly referred to as "America's First Illustrator" for the engravings he produced for early American books, periodicals, and newspapers. Anderson was the youngest artist to contribute to George Maynard's Whole Genuine and Complete Works of Flavius Josephus, only seventeen years old at the time. His contributions included 7 engraved plates including 2 maps and a plan of Jerusalem. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22.5 inches by 20.25 inches. A nice presentation.
According to the Bible, the Israelite history of Jerusalem began in 1000 B.C.E. when King David took control of the city and declared it the capital city of the Kingdom of Israel. King Solomon, son of King David, later constructed the Temple of Solomon which became the major cultural center of the region and the main place of worship. Throughout the following centuries, control of the city was unstable, yet it remained one of the greatest centers of religious history, worship, and pilgrimage in the world. In 37 B.C.E., Herod the Great captured the Jerusalem, leading to the First Jewish-Roman War which destroyed much of the city in 66 C.E. The city was rebuilt in 135 C.E. by Roman Emperor Hadrian who built the Jupiter Capitolinus which later became the Church of the Holy Sepulchre under Emperor Constantine. One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem remains one of the richest archaeological sites in the world.
