First edition of the Sidey's revered biography of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Dec 1975 For Bill Safire, a man who knows a literary find when he uncovers it - with warm regards from his friend Hugh Sidey." The recipient, William Safire was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixon’s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and supported him again in 1968. After Nixon’s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew. He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column “On Language” in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safire’s “magnum opus,” Safire’s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Lawrence Ratzkin.
A Very Personal Presidency is an attempt to explain the major phenomena of the Johnson years in relation to the man himself. It traces not so much the physical details of our involvement in Vietnam as Johnson's mental processes and the prejudices and the conditioning that led him to make the decisions that he did. The President's great yearnings, often misunderstood, are analyzed in acutely personal terms and the major problems of the times are examined in the vivid flesh and blood of the man who tried to solve them.
