First edition of Nazaroff's complete biography of Tolstoy. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece portrait of Tolstoy, illustrated. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. Ownership name.
This story of Tolstoy's life, complete in one volume, neither sets its subject on a pedestal nor underlines the great Russian's sins for the sake of salacious amusement. Rather, it shows what events, adventures, thoughts, dreams, passions, achievements, and mistakes filled the eighty-odd years of his life. After the Russian Revolution, Alexander Nazaroff made his home in New York, where he established himself as an authority on Russian literature. His biography of Tolstoy contains the first translations ever made of much new material which had only recently come to light in the early 1900s and which he alone was able to study in the original Russian.
