Camus devoted years of patient effort in recreating for the theater Dostoyevsky's great, prophetic novel, which, as Camus wrote in his foreword, he grew up on, took sustenance from, and for years visualized on the stage. In his adaptation Camus restored Stavrogin's originally censored confession to its rightful pace in the drama and drew upon Dostoyevsky's several hundred pages of Notebooks for The Possessed. The play was a critical success as well as an artistic and technical tour de force; featuring 33 actors, 4 hours long, 7 sets, and 24 scenes.
