First edition of Kanin's intimate portrait of British playwright Somerset Maugham. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "21 Sept 67 This one is for Joy - with much gratitude and affection. Garson Beverly Hills." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Foreword by Noel Coward. Jacket design by Chermayeff and Geismar. Jacket photograph by Leonard McCombe.
This kaleidoscopic portrait of Somerset Maugham grew out of a long, warm friendship between him and the famous American playwright-director Garson Kanin. Though Maugham was Kanin's senior by nearly forty years, the two quickly established a never-flagging community of interests which produced exciting conversation whenever they met in New York, Hollywood and London. Because Kanin made notes while conversation was fresh, his book takes form as a journal, or informal series of impressions.
