First edition of this landmark of Enlightenment thought. 12mo, bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, red spine label, raised bands, gilt ruled. In very good condition with rubbing and wear to the extremities, contemporary name to the title page, bookplate. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very nice example of this important treatise.
Hume's Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding has proven highly influential, both in the years that would immediately follow it publication in 1748 and today. Immanuel Kant points to it as the book which woke him from his self-described "dogmatic slumber" The Enquiry is widely regarded as a classic in modern philosophical literature.
