In The Unlikely Event follows the story of fifteen-year-old Miri Ammerman as she copes with a series of unexpected and unexplained airplane crashes that occur in her own backyard. The novel is based on three actual plane crashes that took place in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Blume's hometown, over the course of 58 days between 1951 and 1952.
